Masaryk Railway Station, one of the oldest railway stations in the Czech Republic, is used by more than 40,000 passengers every day. The renovation works will not only significantly increase the station’s capacity but will also better integrate the station into the urban surroundings. The contract foresees the expansion of the number of tracks to the platforms from seven to nine, the adaptation of the existing platforms to allow for barrier-free access, the renewal of crossovers, signalling technology and overhead lines, and the construction of additional passing tracks. The architectural and structural highlight of the project, however, is the triangular, 8,600 m² steel platform to be built above the tracks, which will serve as a pedestrian link between Hybernská and Na Florenci streets while allowing barrier-free access to the platforms and facilitating transfers to the Prague Metro and the adjacent landmark buildings designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. Part of the platform will be greened to create an oasis of calm in the centre of the city, with irrigation planned via a rainwater management system. The overall project is quite complex, requiring the close coordination of the individual trades, with works being carried out in a veryconfined space with virtually no restrictions to railway operations.
